Napoleon – Battle of Austerlitz, Triptych (Right Side), 2024

Daniil Litvinov

Litv 1176

"Napoleon" – Battle of Austerlitz, Triptych (Right Side) by Daniil Litvinov is the triumphant and dramatic culmination of the triptych, capturing the iconic image of Napoleon Bonaparte at the peak of his military genius. At the center, Napoleon rises above the battlefield on a rearing white horse, holding his baton aloft — the universal symbol of command and destiny. He is flanked by finely dressed officers, thundering cavalry, and banners waving in chaotic splendor. Below him, the battlefield is littered with the wounded and defeated, including a fallen Austrian officer pleading to the heavens. Cannon fire and chaos erupt in the background, while the imperial eagle — a symbol of Napoleon's empire — soars above as if to crown his victory. What the artist expresses: Litvinov presents Napoleon not just as a general, but as a mythic figure — part hero, part tyrant, elevated above the suffering he commands. The artist contrasts the grandeur of uniforms and order with the grotesque suffering and madness below. Horses snarl, soldiers scream, and the field becomes a baroque theatre of conquest and mortality. This right panel completes Litvinov's Austerlitz triptych by emphasizing the illusion of control and the seductive power of glory. The painting both celebrates and critiques the cult of Napoleon: a brilliant leader whose rise came at a devastating cost. The work is a visual opera of empire, ambition, and the thin line between triumph and tragedy.
