Description
Olya Kravchenko's The Light is a luminous, contemplative artwork that brings together traditional icon-making techniques with a modern, symbolic aesthetic. Painted on a gessoed wooden board using tempera, graphite, gold leaf, and a velvet-soft finish, the piece is rich in visual texture and emotional resonance.
At the heart of the composition is a delicate, stylised face – quiet, introspective, and timeless – gently emerging from a golden ground. The drawing is executed in soft graphite lines, reminiscent of early religious portraits, while a glowing yellow shape, almost like a sacred relic or flame, hovers just above the figure's hand. The far right of the painting dissolves into smoky tones and flecks of black, creating a visual and emotional gradient from light to dark.
The piece is not just to be viewed but also to be felt – the surface is unusually soft, echoing the tenderness of the subject matter. This fusion of historical technique with tactile innovation is central to Kravchenko's artistic voice, rooted in Ukrainian sacred art but open to contemporary reinterpretation. The Light is a visual poem about presence, offering, and quiet transformation.
Presentation
Olya Kravchenko is a Ukrainian painter born in 1985 in Lviv. A graduate of the Lviv National Academy of Arts, she studied restoration and developed a strong command of ancient techniques such as egg tempera and gilding. Deeply rooted in Ukrainian artistic tradition – her grandfather was a painter of the Boichukist school – her work often reflects this heritage through stylized forms and structured compositions. Kravchenko's paintings reinterpret sacred imagery through a modern lens, elevating everyday moments into symbolic reflections on human presence and perception. Her artworks frequently blend painting with audiovisual elements, resulting in immersive, multisensory exhibitions. Her works are held in museum and private collections across Europe, the Americas, and Australia.
