Olya Kravchenko's Land is a compact yet evocative painting that merges sacred art traditions with modern abstraction. Created using acrylic pour techniques alongside egg tempera and gold leaf, the work resembles a lush, imagined landscape – something between satellite photography and dreamscape.
This technique, originally developed by Kravchenko as a therapeutic exercise for veterans undergoing rehabilitation, imbues the work with a deep emotional charge. The textures and colours – ranging from mossy greens and earthy browns to flashes of yellow and shimmering gold – recall the natural world from a distance, yet suggest internal terrain just as powerfully.
A golden grid of stylised faces anchors the composition in the lower left, referencing the artist's signature use of symbolic figuration. This fusion of tactile abstraction and iconographic detail bridges the gap between old and new, personal and collective, land and memory. Land is a piece that speaks quietly but with emotional depth, carrying layers of meaning beneath its flowing surface.
Presentation
Olya Kravchenko is a Ukrainian painter born in 1985 in Lviv. A graduate of the Lviv National Academy of Arts, she studied restoration and developed a strong command of ancient techniques such as egg tempera and gilding. Deeply rooted in Ukrainian artistic tradition – her grandfather was a painter of the Boichukist school – her work often reflects this heritage through stylized forms and structured compositions. Kravchenko's paintings reinterpret sacred imagery through a modern lens, elevating everyday moments into symbolic reflections on human presence and perception. Her artworks frequently blend painting with audiovisual elements, resulting in immersive, multisensory exhibitions. Her works are held in museum and private collections across Europe, the Americas, and Australia.
