What the mirror remembers, 2025

Vanessa P

This striking artwork presents a surreal portrait of a woman whose features blend seamlessly with an explosion of abstract colors and forms. The composition dynamically combines realism and abstraction, as the woman's face emerges from a chaotic mix of swirling brushstrokes. Her gaze is fixed on an oval mirror, which intriguingly reflects a skeletal figure within. Texture plays a pivotal role, as layers of paint create depth and movement, hinting at themes of identity and transformation. The organic flow of colours and the fragmented elements of the woman's visage compel the viewer to explore the boundary between reality and imagination, making this piece an evocative reflection on self-perception and existential contemplation.

Vanessa is a painter whose work focuses on the classical descriptive depiction, painted in a contemporary manner. Emphasis is given to facial expressions and body movements, which is reinforced by abstract twists, strong gestures and, often, surrealistic elements. Vanessa explores human inner states like loneliness, nostalgia, love and the need for freedom.  Her works are held in private collections in Europe, UK, Australia and US.
