Description
A striking autobiographical painting by Vanessa Beecroft, created in 1993.
Executed in acrylic on canvas, the work features a spectral female figure partially obscured by a large bunch of purple grapes, set against a vivid yellow background
Signed and dated lower right
In natural wooden frame - LARGE WORK - Size approx. 140 x 140 cm
From the private collection of an Amsterdam-based artist and collector, who acquired the piece directly from Beecroft in Italy.
The soft, almost translucent presence of the figure contrasts with the rich saturation of the grape forms, evoking a powerful emotional tension between visibility and concealment, nourishment and control.
The painting reflects key themes that defined Beecroft s early work: food, female identity, and the psychological complexities surrounding eating disorders. Grapes plentiful, sensual, and symbolically loaded are used here as both visual and emotional metaphors. The woman s ghostly appearance and subtle posture suggest fragility, isolation, and introspection. As in much of her early oeuvre, Beecroft transforms personal experience into visual narrative, using the female body not only as subject, but as medium for conceptual exploration.
Vanessa Beecroft (born 1969, Genoa, Italy) is an internationally acclaimed artist known for her groundbreaking performance art, conceptual installations, photography, and drawing. She gained global recognition through her choreographed live performances, often involving groups of women positioned in silent formation, exploring themes of identity, beauty, vulnerability, and the politics of the gaze.
After establishing her early career in Italy, Beecroft moved to the United States, where her work gained international attention. She has since exhibited at major institutions such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Venice Biennale, and MoMA PS1.
Vanessa Beecroft currently lives and works in Los Angeles, where she continues to develop large-scale performances and visual projects. In recent years, she has also collaborated with fashion and music icons, including Kanye West and Tom Ford, contributing to projects that blur the boundaries between art, fashion, and popular culture.
