Description
The composition of the painting is static and portrait-like. The girl is placed in the center, her gaze directed straight ahead. She holds a doll and a school bag. The composition is symmetrical. The overall feeling is of a still moment. The background is light, a grayish beige, with accents on the folds and texture.
The girl is depicted at about 7–10 years old. She has a serious expression. Her dark hair is gathered into braids. She wears a dark gray, almost black school uniform with a white collar, and white stockings. In her hands are a doll and a school bag; these objects serve as symbols: a farewell to carefree childhood (the doll) and the transition to a new, grown-up life (the school bag). The doll is fair-haired and has blue eyes. She is dressed in a red cardigan.
The painting is executed in a realist style.
The overall tone of the painting is calm and slightly melancholic.
