Description
In this small painting from the “e" series, begun in the early 2000s, Charles Belle condenses, on a reduced scale, the major themes that run through his monumental works. Water appears here in its primordial state, whether it be the ebb and flow of a wave, the movement of a river, or a simple current. The artist deliberately leaves the ambiguity open, favoring the power of sensation over realistic precision.
This fragment of water possesses an almost immediate physical quality: one perceives its coldness, a sharp, incisive temperature that seems to pierce the pictorial surface. Charles Belle is not so much concerned with representing nature as with conveying its energy, that moment when the image seems to emerge spontaneously, as if born from silence. This intimate work thus reveals the essential dimension of his art: to make the world appear in its most naked state, prior to any narrative, in a purely sensory intensity.
Presentation
Charles Belle is a painter whose work is distinguished by a poetic and powerful exploration of nature, often deployed in monumental formats. Starting from reality, the artist goes beyond it to reach the very essence of life. For him, nature is not a subject: it is a state, an energy, a passage towards abstraction.
This is reflected in the film “Beyond the Silences", the result of 16 years of filming in his studio (official JIFA24 selection – Louvre Museum).
In 2023, seven French museums joined forces to present the first major retrospective dedicated to Charles Belle, bringing together more than 1,600 works and offering a cross-sectional view of his career.
Present at the biggest contemporary art fairs — Art Basel, Art Basel Miami, FIAC, Art Brussels, Art Paris, Art on Paper Brussels and FAB Paris — Charles Belle has also been a founding member of the Art Identification Standard (AIS) consortium since 2019.
