Description
This painting captures water in its movement, depth, and vibration. Some will recognize the ocean, others will perceive a flow, a passage, a more diffuse energy. It was born from a shared experience, painted in public during a John Coltrane tribute concert, where music and improvisation fueled the artist's hand.
The work then continued in the studio, as the time allotted for the concert could not accommodate the time needed for painting. The work evolved, gaining in nuance, depth, and density, while retaining its initial impetus, the energy that gave it birth. The first version had, in fact, been presented in an exhibition alongside a large painting by Courbet, within the museum's collections, establishing a dialogue between contemporary expression and pictorial tradition.
Presentation
Charles Belle is a painter whose work is distinguished by a poetic and powerful exploration of nature, often deployed in monumental formats. Starting from reality, the artist goes beyond it to reach the very essence of life. For him, nature is not a subject: it is a state, an energy, a passage towards abstraction.
This is reflected in the film “Beyond the Silences", the result of 16 years of filming in his studio (official JIFA24 selection – Louvre Museum).
In 2023, seven French museums joined forces to present the first major retrospective dedicated to Charles Belle, bringing together more than 1,600 works and offering a cross-sectional view of his career.
Present at the biggest contemporary art fairs — Art Basel, Art Basel Miami, FIAC, Art Brussels, Art Paris, Art on Paper Brussels and FAB Paris — Charles Belle has also been a founding member of the Art Identification Standard (AIS) consortium since 2019.
