Description
I painted this picture at Mont d'Or, where ancient trees bend to the storms. They remain, animated by a stubborn energy.
I worked on site for several days. Sometimes storms swept everything away, making every movement uncertain. This painting absorbed something of that ordeal.
In the material itself, some grasses and leaves, carried by the winds, were caught before drying and remaining there, witnesses of the moment of creation.
What guided me in choosing unexpected colors to evoke a tree—a deep dioxazine violet mixed with dark ultramarine blue and white—was less the appearance than the vibration, the inner force of the landscape. My gesture for this painting is close to the gesture of drawing. It is therefore to be seen in echo with the large charcoal drawing I made of the same group of trees.
This work was filmed under equally intense conditions; the sequence now appears in the feature film "Beyond the Silences".
Presentation
Charles Belle is a painter whose work is distinguished by a poetic and powerful exploration of nature, often deployed in monumental formats. Starting from reality, the artist goes beyond it to reach the very essence of life. For him, nature is not a subject: it is a state, an energy, a passage towards abstraction.
This is reflected in the film “Beyond the Silences", the result of 16 years of filming in his studio (official JIFA24 selection – Louvre Museum).
In 2023, seven French museums joined forces to present the first major retrospective dedicated to Charles Belle, bringing together more than 1,600 works and offering a cross-sectional view of his career.
Present at the biggest contemporary art fairs — Art Basel, Art Basel Miami, FIAC, Art Brussels, Art Paris, Art on Paper Brussels and FAB Paris — Charles Belle has also been a founding member of the Art Identification Standard (AIS) consortium since 2019.
