Dragon Ball episode 101 "The Decisive Battle! Son Goku vs. Tien Shinhan"
Akira Toriyama (Toei Studios) 1988
Celluloid 27 x 24.5 cm created with India ink and gouache on original background
Tenshin-Han preparing the Shiyōken attack.
The Shiyōken is a body transformation technique developed by Tenshinhan, a martial arts master from the Crane School (grue-tsuru sen'in). By using it, Tenshinhan grows two additional arms from his ribs, giving him a total of four arms.
The episode is part of the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai, an arc broadcast between February and May 1988. It is one of the most technical and balanced fights of the entire first Dragon Ball series, marking the peak of the "classic martial arts" period.
