Autumn in the mountains, 2019

Serhii Kovalenko

This contemporary landscape oil painting by Serhii Kovalenko captures the vibrant atmosphere of an autumn mountain village through expressive color and painterly energy. Created using the alla prima technique, the work blends impressionism with painterly realism, emphasizing immediacy, light, and movement. A winding rural path leads the viewer through warm ochre fields toward a small village nestled among golden autumn trees. The houses are set against a dramatic mountain backdrop, where dark slopes rise toward distant snow-capped peaks. Cool blues and violets of the mountains and sky contrast harmoniously with the warm tones of the land, creating depth and a strong sense of seasonal transition. Bold brushstrokes, rich texture, and lively impasto bring dynamism to the surface, allowing color relationships to shape form rather than strict detail. The sky, filled with shifting clouds, adds atmosphere and spatial tension, reinforcing the feeling of crisp autumn air. Rooted in contemporary art, this landscape celebrates the harmony between nature and human presence, transforming a rural mountain scene into an expressive and emotionally resonant vision of the season.
