Description
This unique artwork by Jan Henderikse consists of 144 one-cent US coins mounted on a wooden board and arranged in a precise, evenly spaced grid. The repetition of identical copper coins creates a rhythmic surface in which material, reflection, and serial order dominate the visual experience. Subtle variations in patina and light introduce nuance within the otherwise strictly controlled composition.
The work is hand-signed on the reverse.
The work exemplifies Henderikse's long-standing engagement with everyday objects, stripped of their economic function and transformed into autonomous visual elements. By using the cent coin—an object of minimal monetary value—the artist shifts attention to structure, accumulation, and material presence, core principles of his ZERO-related practice.
Professionally framed in our own frame-shop, mounted floating on grey linen, in a high-quality, handcrafted grey wooden frame with UltraVue® UV70 art glass. Size framed approx. 45 x 45 cm.
The work exemplifies Henderikse's fascination with seriality, repetition, and everyday objects transformed into autonomous art. The contrast between industrial, functional materials and the controlled, almost meditative arrangement creates a powerful visual tension. Despite the modest scale of the elements, the work has a strong conceptual presence and sculptural depth.
Jan Henderikse (born 1937-lives in New York) is a Dutch artist and a key member of the ZERO movement, alongside artists such as Heinz Mack, Otto Piene, and Günther Uecker. He developed an international reputation for his distinctive use of everyday materials—coins, bottle caps, matches, boxes, and industrial objects—arranged in repetitive and systematic structures. Henderikse's work is defined by reduction, seriality, and a strong focus on material presence. His works are included in major museum collections worldwide, including the Mercedes Benz Collection and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

Presentation
Jan Henderikse is an eclectic artist, involved in assemblages, installations and limited editions. The originality of his works can be found in his method: he uses whatever materials, like industrial products and discarded materials, and produces serial composition that depicts reality avoiding any personal handwriting or personal touch. Similar to the manufactory process within factories, his art emphasizes impersonality. This original sculpture, Nul, is a white neon tube sculpture. To realize this sculpture, Henderikse wrote on a sheet of paper several times the words "Nul" and "NUL", the translation of ZERO in Dutch. Through a glass blower and neon technician, he translated then his design in a high-impact sculpture.
