Description
This work represents the emblematic baobab tree, a symbol that is both poetic and unsettling, a figure of growth, grounding, and vigilance. The tree, with its powerful and almost anthropomorphic roots, seems to cling to the ground while its dark mass spreads like a dense cloud, punctuated by light strokes evoking the wind or inner movement.
Created on a piece of salvaged Alucobond from an architecture firm, this artwork embodies a process of reuse and transformation. The industrial material becomes a canvas for sensitive expression. Wood, glued on and then painted a deep black, structures the silhouette of the tree and creates a striking contrast with the fine, vibrant lines of the acrylic and Posca pen drawing.
The black and white contrast enhances the graphic dimension of the whole, almost dreamlike. The striations of the trunk and roots recall the cartography of an inner territory, while the compact crown absorbs the light and draws the eye.
Between literary illustration and contemporary work, this revisited baobab questions the notion of growth, memory and responsibility — universal themes that resonate as much in children as in adults.

Presentation
Louis Besnier is a painter and illustrator, born in Paris in 1991. He discovered drawing at a very young age, through tales, illustrated stories by Claude Ponti and comics such as Thorgal and “Where is Charlie?". After studying Geography at the Sorbonne and then Design & Plastic Art, he joined the Maison des Artistes in 2017 and created his first collections.
After a trip to Chile and his design studies, Louis Besnier embarked on his first passions: drawing and illustration through the mass and stacking of shapes and textures. He created mini worlds, with specific themes or simply resulting from dreams.
He works primarily in acrylic and pen (a legacy of design and architecture). The supports vary, from canvas to reclaimed and recycled materials; any medium becomes a playground for free expression.
He transcribes dreamlike landscapes through the imagination, mixed with real architecture and references. Everything transforms little by little, giving way to a surreal world where several elements are hidden.
In 2024, he exhibited for the first time at the Gustave studio, but it was in October 2025 that he had his own solo exhibition at the Hôtel Marceau Bastille, an exhibition called “Balades Nocturnes", which retraces his travels through imaginary landscapes.
