Description
The scene captures a fragile moment where determination and uncertainty coexist with a sense of unease. Are they holding their breath or are they praying? A very particular tension pervades the scene: the bodies seem to simultaneously move forward and hold back, as if attempting to maintain a precarious balance against an invisible force. The movement is lateral, almost gliding, creating a feeling of contained urgency. Each man is absorbed in his thoughts, their faces expressing a palpable intensity and vulnerability. The contrast between light and shadow accentuates the emotional depth of the scene.
Presentation
Patrick Vandecasteele is a French figurative painter whose work explores the psychological and social nuances of the human posture. His figures seem suspended in moments of hesitation, balance, and inner tension, suggesting both confrontation and mutual support.
Working primarily in oil on canvas, he explores the body as a site of resilience and uncertainty, where stability and collapse coexist. His paintings do not depict events, but rather create a state of tension, inviting the viewer to confront the subtle instability that underlies the apparent calm of everyday life.
Since 2021 Patrick Vandecasteele has been exhibiting in galleries and institutions internationally, notably in Paris, Avignon, London, Venice, Milan, Berlin and Luxembourg.
