Description
This striking artwork presents an expressive portrait of a young person, set against a vivid blue backdrop that amplifies the subject's emotional depth. The artist employs bold, dynamic brushstrokes and a warm color palette, capturing the complexities of human expression. The interplay of light and shadow across the face highlights a sense of introspection, while the slightly tilted angle of the head adds a contemplative air. The contrasting colors—rich golds, deep reds, and subtle purples—infuse the piece with energy and vibrancy. The abstraction in the facial features, combined with realistic texture, invites viewers to engage actively, sparking reflection and curiosity about the thoughts that lie behind the intense gaze. This artwork is a masterful balance of realism and abstraction, showcasing the artist's skill in conveying emotion and personality through color and form.
Presentation
Guy Ghazanchyan is a contemporary Armenian painter and sculptor, born in 1991 in Yerevan into a family of renowned artists. The son of painters Gagik Ghazanchyan and Lilit Soghomonyan, and grandson of sculptor Nona Gabrielyan, he was immersed in a rich and stimulating artistic universe from a very young age.
He studied painting at the Armenian State Academy of Fine Arts from 2007 to 2013, graduating with the highest distinction, the Eduard Isabekyan Prize, for his work I Know Where It's Flying. In 2012, he was selected for a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, an experience that marked a turning point in his artistic career.
Ghazanchyan's work explores profound themes such as freedom, identity, and collective memory, often through expressive portraits and symbolic compositions. His major series include Behind the Walls (2016), awarded the Presidential Youth Award; AKANates (2021), exhibited at the Yerevan Museum of Modern Art; and IUVENIS (2022), which celebrates contemporary Armenian youth.
His works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions around the world, including in Washington DC (Traveling Without Moving, 2017), Rome (Subconscious is Freedom, 2025), Zurich, Naples, Groningen, Beirut, and Los Angeles. In 2019, he became a member of the Artists' Union of Armenia.
