Description
Unframed
In this work, Joseph Rethlin explores the vitality and renewal of spring through the image of a bouquet of red tulips placed in a purple vase at the center of the composition. The vibrant and luminous flowers stand out against a background divided into flat areas of blue and soft yellow, creating a striking visual contrast that energizes the scene.
The simplicity of the forms and the boldness of the palette lend the composition an almost abstract dimension, while maintaining a clear connection to the natural world. The pink surface supporting the vase adds warmth and balance, reinforcing the harmony between color and space.
Through this work, Joseph Rethlin seeks to capture the spirit of spring: its light, its freshness, and the peaceful joy that the presence of flowers brings. This painting testifies to his ongoing interest in transforming everyday subjects into contemporary and vibrant compositions, where color becomes the primary mode of expression.
The large size of the artwork highlights the bouquet, allowing the colors to radiate and fill the surrounding space with a sense of vitality and renewal.
Presentation
Joseph Rethlin is a contemporary French painter specializing in contemporary still-life art.
An art collector and dealer, he also worked as a jewelry photographer before dedicating himself to painting. This experience with imagery shaped his approach to composition, light, and texture. After years of observing and collecting paintings, he chose to engage with the canvas himself.
His work centers primarily on fish, lemons, flowers, and everyday objects. In these simple subjects, he seeks a pictorial presence grounded in light, color, and the balance of forms.
His paintings favor clean, uncluttered compositions. The forms remain distinct, while the backgrounds are deliberately simplified to focus the viewer's gaze on the subject. Balancing realism with minimalism, Joseph Rethlin explores how ordinary objects can be transformed through painting into true subjects in their own right.
