Description
This painting features two perfectly rendered mackerel fish, carefully placed on a white plate in the center of the composition. The background is made up of vertical black and white stripes that create a bold and dynamic contrasting effect, highlighting the silvery texture and blueish hues of the fish. The rigid lines of the background contrast with the fluid shapes of the mackerel fish. The artist uses precise brushstrokes to capture the details of the fish's scales and eyes, bringing a sense of striking realism. The absence of superfluous decoration directs the attention to the simplicity and purity of the subject. This work is a striking example of the harmony between realism and abstraction, evoking a serene and meditative mood while emphasizing the raw beauty of nature.

“Two Mackerels on a Plate" oil on linen canvas by Joseph Rethlin

Presentation
Joseph Rethlin is a contemporary French painter specializing in contemporary still-life art.Â
An art collector and dealer, he also worked as a jewelry photographer before dedicating himself to painting. This experience with imagery shaped his approach to composition, light, and texture. After years of observing and collecting paintings, he chose to engage with the canvas himself.Â
His work centers primarily on fish, lemons, flowers, and everyday objects. In these simple subjects, he seeks a pictorial presence grounded in light, color, and the balance of forms.Â
His paintings favor clean, uncluttered compositions. The forms remain distinct, while the backgrounds are deliberately simplified to focus the viewer's gaze on the subject. Balancing realism with minimalism, Joseph Rethlin explores how ordinary objects can be transformed through painting into true subjects in their own right.
