Description

“Tulips of Love" — Large-format contemporary Fauvist-inspired, Matisse-influenced floral still life created in a modern expressive / metamodern figurative style, executed in acrylic on heavyweight acid-free paper (70 × 100 cm / 27.6 × 39.4 in), featuring a luminous palette of lavender, vibrant greens, soft pinks, and turquoise tones—blending bold color, simplified forms, and flattened space with an intuitive, emotionally driven approach.

Natalya Mougenot's signature style can be defined as:

“A contemporary metamodern fusion of Matisse-inspired color freedom and expressive, intuitive gesture—where authenticity, emotional immediacy, and visible brushwork transform simple subjects into living, felt experiences."

In “Tulips of Love," French artist Natalya Mougenot continues her exploration of floral painting as an emotional language, where color and gesture become carriers of feeling rather than representation. Inspired by Matisse's courage to simplify and his ability to elevate the everyday, she embraces color as an independent force—capable of shaping both space and emotion.

“What inspires me in Matisse is his freedom," Natalya shares. “He paints what he feels, not what he sees—and that's where the painting becomes alive."

The bouquet of pink tulips rises generously from a translucent blue-green vase, its stems rendered in energetic, layered strokes that suggest growth, movement, and vitality. The flowers open outward like quiet expressions of tenderness, their repetition creating rhythm and visual harmony.

“I see flowers as emotions," Natalya explains. “Each petal holds something gentle, something human."

Set against a soft lavender background and grounded by a warm, earthy surface, the composition balances calmness and vibrancy. The background remains atmospheric and open, allowing the bouquet to emerge with intensity while maintaining a sense of quiet presence. The vase, painted with fluid transparency and bold interior strokes, becomes both container and extension of the floral energy.

“I never want still life to feel still," she says. “Everything should feel like it's breathing, even in silence."

Working in acrylic on heavyweight professional acid-free paper, Mougenot preserves the immediacy of her process. The paint remains visible, layered yet uncorrected, allowing each gesture to retain its original energy. Nothing is overworked; the painting holds the trace of its making.

“I trust the first impulse," Natalya reflects. “That's where the truth is. If I overwork it, I lose that connection."

This intuitive approach aligns with a metamodern sensibility, where sincerity and awareness coexist. The work embraces beauty and emotional openness without irony, while remaining conscious of its place within art history. It is both a continuation and a renewal—feeling deeply while knowing fully.

Authenticity lies at the core of “Tulips of Love":

“People always feel when something is true in a painting," Natalya says. “You can't imitate that. It either carries life, or it doesn't."

Here, that life is expressed through liberated color. Greens shift across tones, pinks pulse with softness and intensity, and shadows emerge through unexpected hues rather than darkness. The result is not a botanical study, but an experience of warmth, affection, and emotional presence.

“I paint what love feels like, not what it looks like," she adds.

The composition remains open and breathing—forms are suggested rather than fixed, lines appear and dissolve, and the bouquet seems to expand beyond the limits of the vase. This tension between structure and freedom gives the work its depth and resonance.

“Art should feel alive," Natalya affirms. “It should carry the moment it was created in."

Ideal for contemporary interiors, serene living spaces, creative studios, and design-led environments, “Tulips of Love" brings softness, color, and emotional warmth into a space. Its balanced palette and expressive clarity make it particularly suited for bedrooms, intimate living areas, boutique hotels, or curated gallery walls seeking calm vitality and authentic presence.

For collectors and designers alike, the work offers more than aesthetic appeal—it offers truth. A celebration of color, gesture, and sincerity, “Tulips of Love" stands as a vivid example of how influence, when fully absorbed, becomes something entirely personal—something deeply felt.

Presentation

Natalya is a contemporary  french artist living in Lyon.

She was born and grew up in Kazakhstan, the country known for its spacious steppes.

She arrived in France 2003. Since that moment she loves her adoptive country.

She started painting in 2017 and used it as a therapeutic and emotional release during times of crisis. She incorporates this therapeutic approach in her artistic creative process till now.

In her artistic practice she refers to the terms of metamodernism,  which proposes to look at the world from the position of the inner adult.

As an artist and as a woman  she translates the experience of her personal search for balance based on harmony between mind, soul and body. This balance, in her opinion,  is the pillar for the inner adult.

Important components of her work are authenticity, soulfulness, sincerity, emotionality and honesty. She immerses the objects and the characters in the world where there is no falsity, rudeness, loneliness and indifference.

She works  rapidly  and is constantly sensitive  to the details.

Her artistic process is a fine balance between a pre-meditation and spontantainty which helps her to create her expressive atmospheric artworks with a modern touch of impressionism by cultivating a naive art approach.
