With The Flock, the artist unfolds a scene that is both silent and intensely inhabited, where the notion of the collective becomes a symbolic territory. The figures, depicted in a calm and almost timeless frontality, embody a social memory that transcends the individual to become part of a broader cultural continuity.
The work also draws on classical references from art history and philosophical thought. The presence of a sculptural figure inspired by Michelangelo's iconography of the god introduces a humanist and mythological dimension, while the appearance of the serpent—an ambivalent symbol of knowledge, temptation, and transformation—echoes certain philosophical interpretations inherited from the Aristotelian tradition. Through this dialogue between the Renaissance, Antiquity, and the contemporary imagination, the artist constructs a visual language in which temptation becomes a driving force of creation and metamorphosis.
The composition is thus organized like a ritual space where simple gestures, restrained postures, and suspended gazes contribute to a subtle drama. Here, the "flock" is not only understood as a reference to the people or to tradition, but as an invisible structure that shapes behaviors, beliefs, and affiliations.
Through a deliberately minimalist color palette and a stylization of forms evoking both popular iconography and certain ancient pictorial traditions, the work establishes a tension between familiarity and strangeness. This ambivalence opens up a field of reflection on cultural transmission, identity construction, and the persistence of foundational narratives in contemporary societies.
The Flock thus appears as a visual heterotopia where intimate memory, mythological heritage and collective consciousness intertwine, inviting the viewer to recognize in these figures a part of their own social imagination.
Born in Istanbul in 1992, the artist completed his undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Sakarya University, Department of Painting, in 2017. He continues to work and live in Istanbul. Sefa Çatuk creates narratives based on current political events, crafting his own mythology within his paintings. In these narratives, the artist incorporates themes such as social rituals, the moral structure of the public sphere, and cultural codes, creating a new history by reflecting the social and political impact of paintings that represent a turning point in the history of art in our time.
