In Amytis, Sefa Çatuk continues his exploration of dyadic relationships through a silent dialogue between two bodies in space. Faithful to his language that breathes like a textile, flat planes of terracotta and ash blue, figures with suspended gestures, the artist evokes the legend of King Nebuchadnezzar II and Amytis, his Medo queen.

The work does not represent the gardens. It represents what preceded them: the distance between two beings, the charged space that opens up between the one who looks and the one who stands elsewhere, their eyes turned towards a horizon that he cannot see.

Çatuk paints the relationship not as fusion, but as separation. Two figures occupy distinct planes—one anchored, the other suspended. This spatial asymmetry accurately conveys the dynamic between Nebuchadnezzar and Amytis: he, master of the land, walls, and stone; she, inhabiting an inner exile, her eyes fixed on the absent mountains of her native Media.

The goat lying at the center of the composition—a gentle and impassive animal—represents the silent witness to this love. Neither a symbol of sacrifice nor a pastoral ornament, it is simply, in the space between their gazes, like love itself.

Çatuk's pictorial surface is always a conversation between line and matter. The fine hatching that covers the clothes, bodies and trees evokes both Persian miniature and wood engraving — a dual lineage that suits the subject: the ancient Orient filtered through a contemporary sensibility.

The colours — burnt earth, slate blue, sage green, dusty pink — . They tell of its memory: bleached by time, warmed by desire, carried by two beings whose story has outlived the stones.
