Description
This artwork features a striking convergence of realism and abstract expression. The central figure is a skillfully rendered graphite sketch of a person's head, depicted in profile. The head is tilted backward with a sense of calm or transcendence. Emerging from their open mouth is a vibrant burst of purples and pinks, evoking the form of smoke or ethereal mist. The contrast between the precise detailing of the graphite elements and the fluidity of the watercolor-like plume creates a dynamic tension. The piece is an exploration of expression and release, with the colors symbolizing emotion or inner energy. The choice of a monochrome figure against the vivid explosion of color makes for a visually arresting composition, inviting the viewer to ponder the interplay between the tangible and the intangible. This blend of styles showcases the artist's adeptness in merging different mediums to convey depth and emotion.
Presentation
“Art always arrives before me." Gianluca Pompilio was born in Rome in 1991. He is a self-taught artist and has collaborated with the Tobian Art Gallery since the beginning of 2023. Pompilio mixes watercolor with graphite or ink, resulting in a harmony between the different techniques. He prints his work on handmade paper, creating unique results embracing imperfections. He also creatively uses marble to demonstrate its use in new media, such as drawing, as opposed to sculpting or engraving.
