Description
This is much more than a work of art: a scene frozen in mid-action.
Signed by Bernard St Maxent, this unique piece blends painting, sculpture and storytelling in a spectacular composition under a glass case (30 x 30 x 7 cm).
At first glance, a perfectly controlled rainbow gradient catches the eye – a smooth, vibrant, almost hypnotic surface. But very quickly, the work shifts into another dimension: a three-dimensional figure, frozen in effort, seems to literally pull the color out of the painting.
Suspended from a thread, roller in hand, he becomes an actor in the painting itself. Below, open pots of paint, raw, still alive, reinforce this illusion of a moment captured in the midst of a creative gesture.
A striking dialogue between 2D and 3D. Between control and chaos. Between painting and matter.
What if the color wasn't simply applied... but torn off?
Imagine a world where paint doesn't flow from the brush, but where it resists.
Where creating becomes a physical effort.
Almost a fight.
This character does not paint.
He struggles with the material. He pulls, he tears, he extracts the color like raw energy.
Each shade of the rainbow becomes a conquest.
Every action is a victory.
And you, the spectator, are witnessing this suspended moment –
that precise moment when art comes to life before your eyes.
Bernard St Maxent develops a unique artistic universe at the crossroads of sculpture and painting. His work explores the staging of the artistic gesture itself, often through miniature characters that interact with the material.
Her works play with perceptions, blur the lines between reality and illusion, and question the creative process. Each piece becomes a visual narrative where the artist stages… the act of creating.
Presentation
Bernard Saint-Maxent is self taught, and this has allowed him to follow his own ideas in choice of materials and to integrate all new kinds of elements to his creations. His current work revolves around the pranks of an omnipresent rangy character with a joie de vivre.
He gives movement and life to his sculptures. His inspiration comes from the burlesque scenes of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, from current events to advertising, the contradictions of modern life and his own ravings. Even if the subjects he covers don't always make you smile, they are nonetheless treated with humour and a zest for life. He strives to attract attention and then reflection.
Each sculpture is different and “one off" because there is no cast. They are created with a metallicstructure around which he models with resin and then applies a varnish. After a day he applies two coats of bronze paint and after another day he finishes with a patina that looks like bronze. The specs are made separately! The sculpture is then attached to aluminium for wall hanging.
Bernard feels that art should be light-hearted, and that it should bring pleasure.
Bernard Saint Maxent has exhibited widely in Europe. His work has been exhibited in the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, Toronto and New York with Linda Blackstone, with whom he has been associated with since 2008. His work seems to appeal to an international quirky sense of humour, and Bernard has enjoyed sell out shows during this time. He has, to date, held two sell out solo shows in the Place des Vosges, Paris. His work is also exhibited in galleries in Honfleur, Courcheval and St. Paul De Vence in France.
