Description
This artwork presents a captivating display of three swallows in flight, set against a soothing, muted backdrop. The birds are rendered with meticulous attention to detail, showcasing their glossy plumage and streamlined forms. Their wings are elegantly outstretched, capturing the dynamic motion and grace of their flight. Each swallow's distinct markings and iridescent colors are highlighted, creating a vivid contrast against the soft, blurred background. The artist masterfully uses shadow and light to convey depth, lending the piece a sense of realism and movement. The composition deftly balances realism with artistic interpretation, emphasizing the elegance and freedom associated with these migratory birds. This piece is not only a celebration of nature's beauty but also an exploration of themes such as freedom and the fleeting nature of life.
Presentation
Mike Ellis graduated in 2002 with a First-Class Honours degree in Illustration. He works as a Secondary School and Adult Education Art Teacher and engages in regular community outreach programs within Kent. His work has been a part of numerous exhibitions and competitions including The National Open Art Competition, Images: The Best of Contemporary British Illustration and regularly The Affordable Art Fair.
His childhood in Norfolk, watching and rescuing birds and animals, collecting bones and digging up skulls, led to a continued fascination with the fragile and fleeting nature of birds; something that he strives to capture a reflection of in these paintings. Imagery is combined with an assortment of inspiration and ideas to lend a quiet narrative or concept to each painting.
Murmurations is an ongoing collection of work based around birds that takes its title from the name given to a large flock of Starlings where the individuals fly together with something resembling a single, collective consciousness.
