Description
In Cor sobre Tela II (2025), Ritchelly Oliveira presents one of his most visually striking compositions, reducing portraiture to its most essential emotional and symbolic elements. Executed in charcoal and acrylic on canvas, the circular composition places a solitary figure against an intense red background, creating an image that oscillates between revelation and concealment, intimacy and mystery.
The portrait emerges from darkness with only subtle details of the face, eyes, and hands illuminated. This deliberate tension between visibility and obscurity reflects Oliveira's ongoing investigation into human fragility and the emotional complexities that exist beneath the surface of identity. Rather than portraying a specific individual, the figure becomes a universal presence, inviting viewers to confront their own experiences of memory, longing, vulnerability, and self-discovery.
The radiant red field functions as both atmosphere and emotional landscape. Associated with passion, desire, transformation, and psychological intensity, the color envelops the subject in a space charged with emotional resonance. In Oliveira's work, painting becomes a territory where internal experiences are transformed into visual language, allowing invisible feelings to assume a tangible form.
The artist's exceptional mastery of charcoal creates subtle tonal variations within the darkness, revealing delicate textures and forms that reward prolonged observation. This balance between technical precision and emotional depth is central to Oliveira's practice, where realism serves not merely as representation but as a vehicle for empathy and human connection. As the artist has expressed, his work seeks to explore the emotional traces left by relationships, absences, desires, and the continuous search for belonging.
Through its minimalist composition and psychological intensity, Cor sobre Tela II becomes a profound meditation on presence, identity, and the unseen emotional landscapes that shape human experience.
Presentation
Ritchelly Oliveira, visual artist, began his work in 2012, shortly after enrolling in visual arts at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), he found in the human figure a space to present his speech about what he understands most profoundly present in affective relationships. He talks about what he suspects to be love and, believing it to be a universal feeling. It proposes what is common to men, even knowing that this love brings something that is also individual and particular.
Believing that affective relationships are built from the individual and how their surroundings interfere with them, we try to rescue here the possibility of constructing discourses about love, especially black love. The importance of reflecting together on issues such as sexuality, emotional responsibility and colorism are necessary canons in this invitation to embrace the dangerous and exclusionary ideals of romantic love that circulate in our environments.
