Description
Silence by Ukrainian artist Olena Sloboda is an atmospheric semi-abstract mountain landscape built around lightness, calm, and emotional stillness. Soft lavender mountains emerge through layers of misty pink, pale violet, silver-grey, and warm golden tones, creating a composition that feels both expansive and intimate. The painting captures not a specific geographical place, but the emotional sensation of quiet space suspended somewhere between sky, snow, and memory.
The mountain forms are intentionally fragmented and partially dissolved into the surrounding atmosphere. Sloboda uses expressive palette knife textures together with delicate translucent transitions, allowing the landscape to fluctuate between abstraction and recognisable form. This instability gives the painting its meditative quality. Clouds drift almost weightlessly across the composition, while the sharp ridges beneath remain softened by light and distance. The result is a visual rhythm that feels slow, quiet, and deeply contemplative.
Combining contemporary landscape abstraction with poetic atmospheric painting, Silence creates a refined emotional presence suitable for sophisticated interiors and modern art collections. The work invites viewers to pause and engage with subtle variations of colour, texture, and spatial depth, revealing new details and moods over time.
Presentation
Olena Sloboda is a contemporary Ukrainian painter based in Lviv, whose emotionally charged abstract and semi-abstract works explore the relationship between color, memory, atmosphere, and inner perception. Originally trained in fashion design at the Lviv National Academy of Arts, she graduated with distinction and initially built a successful career as a fashion designer before turning fully toward painting - the artistic medium she describes as closest to her inner world and emotional expression.
Working primarily in oil on canvas, Sloboda creates stylized impressions of nature transformed through gesture, texture, and chromatic energy. Rather than depicting landscapes literally, she seeks to convey their emotional resonance and invisible presence through layered surfaces, rhythmic brushwork, and expressive color fields. Her paintings often exist on the threshold between abstraction and recognition, allowing viewers to form their own associations, memories, and psychological responses.
For the artist, color functions not only as a visual element but also as an emotional catalyst capable of influencing mood, memory, and perception. Texture and movement become equally important components of her visual language, creating works that are atmospheric, intuitive, and deeply sensory. Inspired by nature, silence, and fleeting emotional states, Sloboda describes her paintings as portals between the visible and invisible worlds - spaces where intuition and emotion take precedence over narrative certainty.
Olena Sloboda has participated in exhibitions and art projects in Ukraine and internationally, including exhibitions in Switzerland, Spain, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Estonia, Canada, Poland, and the United States. Her practice continues to evolve through an ongoing exploration of emotional abstraction, color psychology, and the poetic relationship between human perception and the natural world.
