Description
The Edge of Flame is a powerful contemporary abstract painting by Ukrainian artist Olena Sloboda that explores the emotional and atmospheric qualities of color through a minimalist horizon composition. Intense yellows, oranges, reds, and crimson tones collide across the canvas, creating the sensation of glowing heat suspended above a calm yet emotionally charged landscape.
The painting exists between abstraction and landscape without fully belonging to either. A thin luminous horizon divides the composition while swirling atmospheric forms dissolve into radiant light above it. The lower part of the work feels reflective and grounded, balancing the explosive energy of the sky with a sense of silence and spatial depth. The result is cinematic, immersive, and deeply emotional.
Olena Sloboda creates her paintings without using traditional brushes, relying instead on palette knives, rollers, soft paper, and other unconventional tools to build layered surfaces and subtle transitions of color. This process gives the work a tactile and atmospheric quality that changes depending on light and viewing angle. The Edge of Flame continues the artist's exploration of abstraction as a direct emotional language shaped through light, movement, and sensation.
Presentation
Olena Sloboda is a contemporary Ukrainian painter based in Lviv, whose emotionally charged abstract and semi-abstract works explore the relationship between color, memory, atmosphere, and inner perception. Originally trained in fashion design at the Lviv National Academy of Arts, she graduated with distinction and initially built a successful career as a fashion designer before turning fully toward painting - the artistic medium she describes as closest to her inner world and emotional expression.
Working primarily in oil on canvas, Sloboda creates stylized impressions of nature transformed through gesture, texture, and chromatic energy. Rather than depicting landscapes literally, she seeks to convey their emotional resonance and invisible presence through layered surfaces, rhythmic brushwork, and expressive color fields. Her paintings often exist on the threshold between abstraction and recognition, allowing viewers to form their own associations, memories, and psychological responses.
For the artist, color functions not only as a visual element but also as an emotional catalyst capable of influencing mood, memory, and perception. Texture and movement become equally important components of her visual language, creating works that are atmospheric, intuitive, and deeply sensory. Inspired by nature, silence, and fleeting emotional states, Sloboda describes her paintings as portals between the visible and invisible worlds - spaces where intuition and emotion take precedence over narrative certainty.
Olena Sloboda has participated in exhibitions and art projects in Ukraine and internationally, including exhibitions in Switzerland, Spain, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Estonia, Canada, Poland, and the United States. Her practice continues to evolve through an ongoing exploration of emotional abstraction, color psychology, and the poetic relationship between human perception and the natural world.
