Good News, 2026

Zakhar Shevchuk

Good News transforms the familiar language of the still life into an exploration of colour, structure and emotional atmosphere. A bouquet of white flowers occupies the centre of the composition, rising from a pale blue vase against a background divided into large geometric fields of yellow, black and white. The result is a work that feels simultaneously playful, sophisticated and unexpectedly uplifting.

While the flowers immediately attract attention, the composition derives much of its strength from the relationship between the various colour planes. The dark upper section introduces depth and visual tension, while the bright lower portion and warm yellow area create a sense of openness and light. Together they establish a carefully balanced framework within which the bouquet appears almost luminous.

Zakhar Shevchuk combines expressive painterly gestures with a highly organised compositional structure. Thick layers of paint, visible brushwork and exposed passages remain intentionally present, allowing viewers to experience both the image and the process through which it was created. The transparent vase is rendered with remarkable economy, acting as a subtle anchor for the vibrant arrangement above.

Although rooted in the tradition of still life painting, Good News feels thoroughly contemporary. The work is less concerned with describing objects than with communicating a mood. Its combination of light, colour and balance creates an atmosphere of optimism, suggesting moments of renewal, celebration and quiet happiness.
