Description
A vibrant celebration of motherhood and ancestral lineage. Two stylized figures lean toward a sleeping infant. Their profiles merge in a tender, protective arc. Bold outlines define the composition. A luminous lime green background radiates warmth and energy.
The figures wear intricate adornments. Red beads and white shells trace the contours of their heads. These details evoke deep cultural roots and spiritual heritage. The infant rests peacefully below. A soft pink garment contrasts with the deep purple tones of the skin.
Dynamic white and red shapes frame the scene. They suggest wings or celestial energy. The movement is fluid. The colors are saturated and precise. This artwork captures a timeless bond. It blends contemporary graphic style with traditional symbolism. The gaze of the adults is serene. It reflects a legacy of love and guardianship. The composition leads the eye from the protective embrace down to the fragile form of the child. Every line serves a purpose. The balance of color creates a harmonious atmosphere of peace and belonging.
Presentation
Martha Ada Okechukwu is a Nigerian visual artist whose practice explores Black identity, lineage, family, relationships, and human connection through contemporary figurative painting. Working primarily in mixed media, she combines acrylic with tactile elements such as beads and cowries to create richly textured surfaces that bridge painting and object.
Her work centers on the spiritual, cultural, and emotional presence of her subjects, often depicting figures with deep black skin tones illuminated by vibrant accents of color, and engaging themes of womanhood, childhood, and generational continuity. Drawing from Igbo heritage and broader African traditions, her compositions reflect themes of identity, resilience, ancestry, and sacred embodiment.
Martha's practice seeks to honor the visibility and inner life of African figures, positioning them as carriers of memory, relationship, and cultural continuity.
