Description

Intention note — Infinity Lessons Unlearned
« Infinity Lessons Unlearned » — « les leçons infinies désapprises » — says the essence of this work: know-how does not accumulate here in a linear way. It unravels and re-forms, in repetition and assumed imperfection.
The loop of infinity, two intertwined curves that repeat without interruption. Turned, twisted, stylized with generous angles and curves, it becomes a letter, a loop always, but which carries with it the imperfections and accelerations that define the stylistic identity. The question of a perfect loop is the execution, which must be in the image of its author. In this case, the hesitation, the superimposed layers of doubts, intentions, and moments of clear visions overlap to bring a bit of this external experience onto the canvas. An airy, grainy background, supportive for the few brushstrokes that define the loop, close to its author, intimate in its brushstroke.
SERVAL thus defines one of his latest canvases through which he tries to capture the movement that defines his style recognized in the Graffiti scene and which brings him constant demand from collectors.
The infinite loop: letter and gesture
SERVAL has practiced Graffiti since 1992, more than thirty years of work on the letter, on the walls first, then on the canvas. His tag — SERVAL — is derived from the French name of Wolverine, his favorite Marvel character, which he has used since his beginnings. Over time, the letter S of SERVAL has become, in his practice, an autonomous form: the infinity loop found in « Infinity Lessons Unlearned ».
This is the very nature of the writer's practice: a letter repeated thousands of times, until it escapes conscious control and becomes pure automatism of the gesture — what theorists of sport call "muscle memory" and what Graffiti embodies better than any other artistic discipline. « Infinity Lessons Unlearned » speaks precisely of this paradox: one does not learn the letter, one unlearns it so that it returns to its source.
The question of a perfect loop is that of the execution, which must be in the image of its author. The hesitation, the superimposed layers of doubts and moments of clear vision overlap to bring a bit of this experience onto the canvas.
An artist at the crossroads of several practices
Born of a dual Swiss and American nationality, trained on the walls of Geneva and then in the streets of Philadelphia between 1995 and 1999, SERVAL is also a dancer and illustrator and author. This multiplicity of practices — the body, the image, the text — nourishes the emotional and formal density of his canvases. His passion for classical and contemporary painting, developed through contact with the collections of the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Genève (MAH) where he has been a resident artist since 2016, gives him a perspective that distances him from artists of his generation who came solely from the street.
His work has been the subject of international publications — « World Piecebook » (Prestel, 2011) and « Graffiti Burners » (Dokument Press, 2011) — and exhibitions from Tel Aviv to Mannheim, from New York to Singapore.
Institutional links
SERVAL has been a resident artist at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Genève (MAH) since 2016, an institution that entrusted him with the creation of a 16 × 9 meter mural in the city of Geneva, as part of the project « Hors Cadres », inspired by a painting by Jacques-Laurent Agasse from the museum's collection.
« Infinity Lessons Unlearned » is one of the two pieces — with « Style Loops » — created specifically for the exhibition « Graffiti, letters & styles » organized by the Galerie du Boléro in Versoix, in partnership with the gallery OUTSIDE ART (May 8 – July 27, 2025). This reference exhibition, which also hosted BANDI, KASER, REYONE, SMASH137, WHYRE and ZURIK, is one of the few institutional exhibitions dedicated to Graffiti in its most demanding sense in Switzerland.
Formal analysis
On the 100 × 100 cm square format, the loop unfolds in all available space. The airy background — grainy, worked in light layers — lets the main form breathe. Superimpositions of layers, crackle effects, the slight texturization of the work are part of the artist's research. The brushstrokes that define the loop are economical: every stroke counts, none is superfluous. It is the lesson of thirty years of gesture on the walls: mastery is not expressed in the quantity of strokes, but in their precision.
« Infinity Lessons Unlearned » is an intimate work, which reveals itself on the scale of the body — unlike the panoramic « Style Loops ». It is a confidence, not a demonstration. It speaks of the inside of the practice, what no one sees when the artist is in front of their wall.

Presentation
