Description

In Iris, Cristiano Felismina explores the tension between desire, addiction and personal freedom through a quietly unsettling portrait. Painted in 2021, this work demonstrates the artist's early mastery of psychological realism, where contemporary symbolism becomes a vehicle for examining the invisible struggles of everyday life.

A young woman stands beneath the unmistakable glow of a neon No Smoking sign. Positioned directly behind her head, the illuminated circle recalls the visual language of a halo, creating an immediate paradox. Traditionally associated with purity and protection, the halo is here replaced by a symbol of prohibition while the subject calmly smokes a cigarette. This deliberate contradiction transforms the painting into a reflection on human contradiction itself: we often recognise what harms us while continuing to embrace it.

The warm orange and crimson light dominates the composition, enveloping the figure in an atmosphere that is simultaneously seductive and oppressive. Rather than functioning merely as illumination, the neon glow becomes a psychological environment—one that blurs the boundaries between temptation, comfort and isolation. The smoke softens the subject's features, reinforcing the sensation that reality itself is dissolving into introspection.

Cristiano Felismina avoids moral judgement. Iris is not a painting about smoking alone, but about the complexity of human behaviour: addiction, anxiety, routine, rebellion and the fragile negotiation between self-control and desire. The direct gaze invites viewers to question their own habits and contradictions, making the portrait resonate far beyond its immediate subject.

Executed in oil on linen, the painting exemplifies Felismina's characteristic approach to realism. Visible brushwork, subtle transitions of light and carefully orchestrated colour create what the artist describes as the "illusion of detail"—an image that achieves emotional truth rather than photographic imitation. Every surface serves the psychological narrative, allowing the portrait to exist between realism and symbolism.

Today, Iris can be understood as an important precursor to the themes later developed in the acclaimed exhibition. The emotional silence, restrained expression and symbolic use of colour already reveal an artist deeply interested in vulnerability, identity and the hidden emotional realities that define the human condition.

Presentation
