Description
"The Empress" is part of Originelles, a series of twenty-two paintings inspired by the major arcana of the tarot. Each figure becomes an allegory of origins, memory, and transmission.
In this work, the Empress appears as a force of fertility deeply connected to the earth. Her body does not dominate the landscape: it emerges from it. Between desert, light, and matter, she embodies the moment when the living resumes breath. The body becomes a place of germination, where flesh, elements, and time mingle in a single movement of transformation.
Painted in oil on wood, this painting explores our essential link to the living world. It evokes a silent presence, rooted in matter, where every step on the earth becomes a way to fully inhabit the present.
Presentation
Déborah Calfond (born in 1986) is a French visual artist whose practice unfolds between painting, drawing, and writing. A graduate in architecture, she develops a figurative and symbolic work where the body becomes the territory of memories, metamorphoses, and the invisible links that cross generations.
Through painting with mixed techniques and supports, sensitive and meticulous, she explores the themes of filiation, femininity, animality, and transmission. Nourished by mythology, founding narratives, and archetypes, her universe invites a reading of the human experience that is both intimate and universal.
Her works have been presented in personal and collective exhibitions in France and are regularly accompanied by projects combining writing, scenography, and performance.
