Description
A bold exploration of the female form. This mixed media painting captures a moment of profound intimacy. The composition is dynamic. A body twists across the canvas in a fluid, rhythmic motion. Warm flesh tones contrast sharply against a deep, atmospheric background. The palette shifts from soft peaches to bruised purples. This creates a sense of tension and vulnerability.
The artist employs a fearless approach to the nude. She challenges traditional gender roles through a feminist lens. Every curve is rendered with precision and empathy. The figure is not a passive object. Instead, the subject claims her own space. The gaze is direct and knowing. It invites the viewer into a private, subconscious realm.
The technique blends smooth transitions with raw, expressive strokes. This duality mirrors the complexity of human desire and dreaming. The artwork functions as a critique of patriarchal standards. It celebrates empowerment through the reclamation of the body. Light dances across the skin, highlighting the physical presence of the subject. The image remains suspended between reality and a surreal vision. It concludes with a focus on the delicate intersection of shadow and light.
Presentation
Dzovig Arnelian (b. 1996) is a Beirut-based Lebanese-Armenian artist whose works address themes related to gender roles, feminism, and the criticism of patriarchy. Her practice is mainly focused on painting and exploring her body as her paint brush, etching, engraving, and photography. Her depiction of deeply personal subjects is bold yet sensitive, offering a view of her world in an intimate, subtle and vulnerable manner.
Arnelian's contemporary expressionist style is typified by her use of bold and vibrant colors and she also experiments with versatile mediums, using material from her everyday life that evoke feelings of sensuality, love, fertility, and intimacy. Arnelian's bold yet delicate expression challenges prevalent stereotypes about femininity, sexuality and feelings we trap and express in our bodies.
Arnelian obtained her bachelor's degree in plastic arts in 2019 and later completed her master's degree in fine arts in 2021 from the Lebanese University. She held her first solo exhibition "24 Universes" in 2020 at Artlab Gallery in Beirut and has since participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Egypt, Spain, the United States and Japan. Her works have also been acquired by many private collectors from across the world.
Dzovig Arnelian is also the founder of Arneli Art Gallery.
