Description
This painting captures a solitary vegetal silhouette. A tree stands in the center of a graphic composition. The contrast is marked between the deep black of the trunk and the clarity of the background.
The upper part of the painting is illuminated by a solar yellow. This color saturates the space and evokes an intense light. Vertical drips rhythmically mark the surface. They create an effect of rain or a translucent curtain.
The base of the work shifts towards gray and dark tones. This area evokes a ground saturated with water or a shimmering reflection. The visual balance rests on this chromatic opposition.
The technique emphasizes a tension between stability and dissolution. The tree seems anchored in a changing landscape. The work on transparency brings a melancholic depth to the scene.
The rendering recalls photography while retaining the materiality of the painting. This piece dated 2025 explores the link between nature and territory. The whole ends with a play of vertical lines that fade towards the bottom.
Presentation
Bashar Alhroub is a Palestinian artist whose work explores place, identity, memory, and the experience of belonging. Working across photography, video, installation, drawing, and painting, he examines the ways in which political and social environments shape personal identity. His more recent work has increasingly focused on self and the human body, exploring vulnerability, uncertainty, and the ways individuals understand themselves within conditions of conflict and displacement.
Born in Jerusalem in 1978 and raised in Hebron, Alhroub studied Fine Arts at Al-Najah National University, graduating in 2001. He later received his Master’s degree in fine arts at the Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, in the United Kingdom, in 2010. His work has been exhibited widely and is held in a number of international collections. In 2012, he received the Grand Prize at the 14th Asian Art Biennale in Bangladesh. Alhroub currently lives and works in Ramallah.
