Description
The brush captures here the fragility of a temporary shelter. The composition is structured around a white textile structure, whose folds suggest a precarious refuge. This textile contrasts with a dark, dense ground, evoking a land marked by time.
The sky stretches in horizontal bands. Ocher and yellow tones dominate the horizon, bringing a warm but heavy light. The material is applied generously, creating a tactile relief typical of the artist's gesture.
This canvas explores the notion of dwelling and instability. The architecture represented is not fixed. It seems to evolve, between reconstruction and erasure. The gaze moves between the whiteness of the roof and the touches of green that punctuate the base of the structure.
Realized in 2024, this painting testifies to a reflection on space and confinement. The management of chromatic contrasts emphasizes the tension between hope and the harshness of the terrain. The whole stabilizes through a subtle balance between the areas of shadow and the bright flashes of the sky.
Presentation
Mohammed Joha is a Palestinian multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses painting, drawing, collage, installation, photography, and video. Working with materials such as paper, cardboard, fabric, and found objects, he creates layered compositions that combine abstraction with personal narratives. His work is shaped by memories of Gaza and his experience of living between Palestine and France, exploring themes of distance, displacement, belonging, and the changing relationship to place.
Born in Gaza in 1978, Joha received his bachelor’s degree from Al-Aqsa University in Gaza in 2003. He has since received several awards and participated in international artist residencies, contributing to the development of his artistic practice. Rather than directly documenting political events, Joha transforms fragments of everyday life into poetic reflections on loss, resilience, and memory. His recent paintings and collages respond to the devastation and displacement experienced in Gaza, where the process of assembling and reconstructing materials becomes a way of reflecting on rebuilding and renewal. The artist currently lives and works in Marseille, France, where he continues to develop his artistic practice.
