Description

This figurative painting explores the emotional complexity hidden within a moment of complete stillness.
A young woman crouches close to the ground, her body folded into a compact, almost protective position. Her head rests against her hand, yet her eyes look directly towards the viewer. The openness of that gaze contrasts with her closed posture, creating an immediate psychological tension. She seems vulnerable, but not fragile; tired, but not defeated.
The setting intensifies this ambiguity. A wide, pale sky and a quiet horizon open the composition towards space and distance, while a large architectural wall rises beside her, creating a strong sense of boundary. The woman appears to inhabit an in-between space — suspended somewhere between freedom and protection, exposure and shelter.
Her black dress forms the visual and emotional centre of the painting. Against the soft blue-grey and warm sandy tones of the surroundings, the dark figure acquires a remarkable physical presence. The heavy black boots further ground her, giving weight and solidity to an otherwise introspective scene.
The atmosphere is restrained and almost cinematic. Gentle light, muted colours and the simplicity of the composition allow the psychological state of the figure to become more important than any external event. Nothing dramatic is taking place, but the image carries an unmistakable sense of inner tension.
The painting does not explain who she is or what she is thinking. Instead, it invites the viewer to remain with her for a moment. Is she waiting? Recovering from exhaustion? Thinking about what comes next? Or has she simply withdrawn from the world for a while?
By leaving these questions unanswered, the work becomes open to personal interpretation. The woman may remind one viewer of solitude, another of waiting, another of emotional fatigue or the need to pause when life becomes overwhelming.
This is a painting about the space between movement and stillness — a quiet psychological moment in which everything appears calm on the surface, while an entire inner world remains invisible.
Dutch acrylic paints Amsterdam™ and Italian canvas by Unico were used. The artwork is finished with satin varnish, with painted edges matching the background. Created on a pre-stretched canvas on a wooden frame. Signed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Carefully packed for safe delivery.

Presentation

Nataliya Bagatskaya (b. 1967 in Horodyshche, Ukraine; now based in Kyiv) is a distinguished Ukrainian contemporary artist and member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. She graduated in 1993 with a degree in clothing design from Kyiv National University of Technology and Design. She works primarily in acrylic, applying traditional oil painting techniques to achieve extremely detailed, hyperrealistic, photorealistic, and contemporary realism compositions within a metamodern framework.

Her thematic range includes portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and narrative scenes infused with pop culture, political references, iconic symbols, and visual irony. Bagatskaya’s creative approach melds technical craftsmanship with conceptual storytelling, creating visually powerful yet emotionally resonant artworks.

Her exhibition record exceeds 30 group shows and four solo exhibitions in Ukraine and abroad, including “A Little of Silence” (Kiev, 2017), “Wish You Were Here” (Lesya Ukrainka Museum, 2018), “The Night” (Zavalnyi Art Center, 2018), and “Live in Avatar” (Art‑Caffe Klub, 2022). Internationally, she participated in the 2019 Venice Biennale, art fairs in Toronto, and gallery projects in Italy, Switzerland, and Barcelona.

In 2021, she received the Grand Prix at the ProCheese Awards in Kyiv and was featured in prominent Ukrainian art platforms and exhibitions such as “365 Days After,” “Women in Art,” and “Hryvnia Art.” Her works are held in notable public collections, including the Museum of Outstanding Figures of Ukrainian Culture in Kyiv and the Korsak Museum of Modern Art in Lutsk, with additional acquisitions by private collectors across Europe and Asia.

Bagatskaya combines her background in fashion design with an exacting painting process involving over 100 preparatory photographs and multiple draft versions, sometimes up to six iterations per work. She dedicates up to 11 hours daily in her studio, striving to elevate acrylic painting to photographic realism that delivers a powerful “wow” factor. Her art challenges the boundary between human perception and imagery, using acrylic as a visual language.
