With this monumental work, Achao continues a line of research in which the motif gradually moves away from its vegetal references towards a vocabulary of forms evoking the human body. Painting no longer seeks to represent the world, but to construct its own visual language. Rhythm, colour and intervals thus become the true subjects of the composition.
The fluorescent yellow covering the surface acts as a luminous field within which pink and orange forms seem to emerge, float and drift. The monumental scale engages the viewer's body while inviting a slow, contemplative gaze. The areas of untouched space play an active role in the composition, allowing each sign to retain its autonomy while contributing to the balance of the whole.
The formal vocabulary reveals an important transformation in Achao's work. Vegetal structures give way to a constellation of biomorphic signs, sometimes resembling human silhouettes, anatomical fragments or ideograms. Reduced to their essentials, these forms tell no story: they function instead as elements of an autonomous visual syntax. Triangular facets, hatching and internal lines give them a graphic density that fully reveals itself when viewed at close range.
This research resonates with certain aspects of Henri Matisse's work, particularly his , in which the simplification of form allowed contour and colour to become directly united. The biomorphic freedom of the silhouettes and the autonomy of the sign also evoke echoes of Jean Arp and Paul Klee. These affinities, however, are less a matter of direct quotation or lineage than of a dialogue with an art history in which form, freed from its descriptive function, becomes a language.
Palimpseste V thus marks an important stage in the development of Achao's pictorial vocabulary: the figure is no longer intended to represent, but to signify a presence. Through the repetition of the motif, the circulation of signs, and the tension between saturation and emptiness, the work constructs a contemplative space in which colour, gesture and form compose a silent writing, open to the movement of the gaze.
Achao is a French artist born in 1966 who lives and works in Chamalières, France.
Serenity and Joy: The Ephemeral in Motion by Achao
The artistic universe of Achao, a French artist, invites you to a deep contemplation and serenity. His works stand out through a juxtaposition of transparent motifs that create blur effects, encouraging a certain introspection. Through his creations, Achao captures the essence of a world in perpetual motion while offering both a visual and spiritual experience. His art aims to convey a sense of joy, inner peace, and harmony. At the heart of Achao's painting lie three categories of motifs. The first is inspired by Henri Matisse's cut-out papers, where color and form intertwine to create a graceful dance. The second category pays homage to the bas-reliefs of the Dhamek Stupa in Sarnath, an iconic Buddhist site in northern India. Here, the profusion of organic motifs infuses a deep spirituality. Finally, Achao explores the enchanting entanglement of bubbles, transforming them into an infinite network of lines that enhances the immersive quality of his large-format paintings. Color plays a central role in Achao's works. Each color palette is meticulously crafted to resonate with the viewer's emotions, creating an atmosphere that encourages tranquility and joy. The bold use of color not only captivates the eye but also evokes a sense of harmony and balance. The palette ranges from serene pastels to more vibrant tones.
Achao regularly exhibits in France, Belgium, and Italy, fostering an intimate dialogue with the spaces and audiences. His paintings have traveled to iconic venues such as the Institut français Centre Saint-Louis in Rome and the Angelica Gallery. A monographic exhibition was dedicated to him in the rotunda of the Saint-Paul campus of the Catholic University of Lyon (UCLy). He has also exhibited at the Halles Saint-Géry in the center of Brussels. Achao's paintings are presented on unstretched canvas. A suspension system is integrated into the upper part of the canvas. This metal system, slid into a sleeve, conceals the nails or screws used for hanging. You may also choose to frame the painting or mount it on a stretcher. The artwork is shipped in a very sturdy tube, ensuring its protection. For larger-scale projects, Achao is available for on-site collaborations, adapting his artistic vision directly to your space. This personalized approach fosters a deeper connection between the artwork and its environment.
