The Illusion of Enlightenment, 2026

Hua Qing

A striking oil painting by Hua Qing presents a surreal encounter against a deep black void. A luminous unicorn strides forward with a steady, rhythmic gait. Its coat shimmers in pale blue and white tones. Perched upon its back is a mischievous monkey. The primate holds a thin rod with a concentrated expression. A small carrot dangles from a string, teasing the creature below.
This figurative artwork explores themes of desire and control through a playful lens. The contrast between the mythical purity of the unicorn and the cunning nature of the monkey creates a poignant tension. The artist employs a rich texture to bring volume to the animal forms. Every brushstroke enhances the tactile quality of the fur and the ethereal glow of the horn. The composition remains centered and balanced. It captures a moment of artificial motivation. The scene reflects a sophisticated blend of contemporary Chinese sensibility and timeless allegory. The light catches the edges of the figures, isolating them in a timeless space. The vivid orange of the carrot serves as a single, sharp focal point within the cool palette.
