Description
The work represents a masterly painterly optical illusion situated at the intersection of hyperrealism and poetic abstraction, investigating the distortion of visual perception through the veil of rain.
Space and Optical Dualism
Two planes of reality: The artist divides the canvas into two simultaneous dimensions: the micro-world of the glass surface and the dissolved macro-world of the urban environment beyond.
Hyperrealistic foreground detail: Raindrops and streaming rivulets are rendered with meticulous precision. Each droplet captures refractions, secondary reflections, highlights, and cast shadows, producing a tangible, wet relief across cold windowpane or automotive glass.
Abstract background defocus: Beyond the glass, concrete reality dissolves into a soft-focus bokeh effect. Street lamps, taillights, car headlights, and architectural silhouettes transform into gentle, glowing pools of luminous color.
Color Palette and Chiaroscuro
Contrast of warmth and cool tones: The overall tonal atmosphere is anchored in a deep slate-gray, graphite, and subdued steel-blue palette characteristic of an overcast rainy day or falling twilight.
Luminous accents: The central and lower registers are animated by warm, pulsing tones—amber, ochre, muted coral, and golden headlights—which contrast sharply with the cool surroundings and a solitary turquoise point of light on the left.
Atmosphere and Concept The painting immerses the viewer into a state of melancholy contemplation, quietude, and intimate shelter amid the relentless pace of urban life. Sologub elevates the ordinary observation of rain through glass into a meditative encounter, where the threshold between the external world and the internal state of the observer is diffused by water and light.
Presentation
Artist Sergei Sologub was born in 1957 in Kirovograd, in the former Soviet Union (now part of Ukraine). From 1978 to 1982, he studied at the Sverdlovsk Art College (now Yekaterinburg, Russia), and subsequently at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow (Russia, 1982–1988). Since moving to Germany in 1991, he has worked as an independent artist.
Landscapes, still lifes, technical motifs, and surreal metamorphoses define the pictorial realms of Sergei Sologub. At first glance, they appear full of harmony, opening an ideal world before the viewer, who delights in the precise rendering of subjects and the painterly sophistication of the artistic concept.
Then comes the second look: this presented slice of the world turns out to be an ironic absurdity. The seemingly ideal world is, in truth, completely unstable. Nothing is what it seems, and nothing is certain—especially perception itself.
Sologub is a regular participant in solo and group exhibitions across galleries in Germany, France, the Netherlands, the United States, and other countries. His works are held in private collections, museums, and gallery holdings worldwide.
