Description
Dynamic energy surges through this oil painting. The artist utilizes a bold impasto technique. Thick layers of paint create a rocky, tactile topography. Cool blues and muted greens collide with sharp flashes of gold and white. The composition evokes the raw power of a crashing wave or a jagged coastline.
This artwork reflects a deep engagement with abstraction. The creator blends figurative references with symbolic gestures. Every stroke feels intentional and rhythmic. He explores the tension between perceived form and pure emotion.
The visual language is rooted in a scholarly approach to painting. Movement is captured through aggressive palette knife applications. Light dances across the ridges of the oil medium. This creates a shimmering effect reminiscent of salt spray and wind. The resulting scene is an evocative seascape that prioritizes atmosphere over literal representation. It stands as a testament to a lifelong dedication to the evolution of Georgian abstract art. The balance of contrasting tones directs the eye across a chaotic yet harmonious surface.
Presentation
Gia Khutsishvili was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, on July 18, 1966, into a family of artists. He graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts in 1989. Since 1990, Khutsishvili has been engaged in academic and pedagogical activities at the Tbilisi State Academy of Fine Arts, where he has taught and contributed to the institution's educational programs. He has also taught painting and delivered lectures at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. Over the course of more than three decades, Khutsishvili has developed a sustained artistic practice alongside his academic, research, and cultural activities. He has participated in and contributed to numerous exhibition projects and cultural events and has been involved in the preparation of publications, books, and art albums. His professional activities also include research and translation. Khutsishvili occupies a distinctive position within the generation of Georgian artists that emerged in the 1990s. His practice is characterized by a sustained engagement with abstraction, symbolism, and metaphor, with mythological themes and imagery constituting an important component of his artistic vocabulary. Through these elements, his work explores questions of perception, interpretation, and the relationship between figurative references and abstract forms. Metaphor plays a fundamental role in Khutsishvili's artistic approach, functioning as a structural principle through which images, symbols, and meanings are brought into dialogue. His works reflect a consistent interest in developing an individual visual language grounded in abstraction while remaining connected to cultural, historical, and mythological references. Khutsishvili's works are held in museum collections and private collections in Georgia and internationally.
