Description

Warm desert tones hold the traces of vanished light. is an original acrylic artwork on cotton canvas from the When the Clay Turns Cold series, where material, memory, and transformation become inseparable.

The composition is built from layered fields of terracotta, burnt orange, ochre, clay, warm beige, rust, brown, black, and cream. Dark vertical and diagonal marks cut through translucent washes, while pale white strokes interrupt the warmer surface like fragments of light that have left their imprint behind. The result feels at once geological, atmospheric, and psychological — like a surface altered over time by exposure, erosion, heat, and memory.

The artist reflects on the idea that light itself cannot be preserved, yet its effects remain. A surface changes where light touches it: some areas fade, others warm, boundaries appear, and differences accumulate. Human memory works in a similar way. It does not reproduce the past exactly, but preserves traces, distortions, intensities, and absences.

In this work, identity is understood as something formed by those accumulated marks. Some experiences remain vivid, others almost disappear, yet all of them continue to influence how we feel, choose, and respond to the present. The original state can no longer be separated from everything that happened afterward.

The desert becomes an especially fitting metaphor for this process. Its surface records light, heat, erosion, shadow, and time continuously, without ever remaining fixed. transforms that idea into an abstract visual field where matter appears to carry memory inside itself.

Its warm earthy palette and strong contrast make the artwork particularly effective in contemporary interiors, where it can add depth without relying on a literal subject. It is also a meaningful gift for someone drawn to philosophy, memory, transformation, and emotionally layered abstract art.

Materials: Acrylic on cotton canvas.

Presentation

PUGMATIK is a contemporary abstract artist and award-winning designer whose practice explores memory, transformation, and the fragile states between appearance and disappearance.

Alesia graduated from the A.M. Shirokov Institute of Modern Knowledge with a degree in Virtual Environment Design and has been a member of the Belarusian Union of Designers since 2013. Alongside her artistic practice, she has built an internationally recognized career in branding and packaging design, receiving awards from organizations including GDUSA (USA), Pentawards (Belgium), World Brand Design Society (UK), and A' Design Award (Italy).

This background in visual systems and layered communication strongly informs her painting practice. Working primarily with acrylic abstraction, PUGMATIK creates atmospheric compositions that exist between presence and erosion, structure and dissolution. Her artworks emerge through gradual layering processes in which traces, textures, and translucent forms partially conceal one another, embedding a sense of time into the surface.

Rather than depicting literal landscapes, her works evoke emotional and psychological atmospheres. Soft diffused structures interact with more defined gestures, creating tension between stability and disappearance. Memory, perception, and transformation become central themes, while the image itself remains intentionally unresolved and open to interpretation.

Her visual language reflects both designerly precision and intuitive experimentation, balancing restraint with emotional depth. The artworks function as meditative spaces where forms seem to appear and fade simultaneously, like fragments of memory that cannot be fully recovered.

PUGMATIK will present new work at REDISCOVERED by The Holy Art Gallery in Barcelona in 2026.

Through abstraction and layered surfaces, PUGMATIK creates paintings that explore transformation not as rupture, but as a continuous and quiet process of becoming.
