Description
The hanbok is a whole form of belonging, worn by someone with no ground under them. A homeland on the body – and no land underfoot.
Belonging isn't chosen – it's handed to you ahead of time and in full: place, lineage, language, the very “where you're from." You can accept it without reserve, wear it honestly and fully, never taking it off. But what's given lies on top of you, not beneath your feet, and the more fully you carry it, the clearer this rift becomes: the form is all there, down to the last detail, and beneath it, no footing at all.
And at some point you can no longer tell which is you and which is it: whether it holds you or you hold it. No leaving, no returning, no refusing – because giving up one side doesn't make the other yours. Everything that says where you're from stays with you for good.
Ships rolled in a rigid tube, delivery included. Stretched delivery, in a wooden crate or a box, is available on request – message me before purchasing for a quote.
Presentation
Marina Ogai (b. 1993, Maysky, Kabardino-Balkaria, Russia) has drawn for as long as she can remember, and being an artist was her earliest dream. Her formal training began at the children's art school in Maysky (2005–2010), followed by painting, drawing and composition at Moscow State University of Design and Technology (2010–2016).
Russian by first name and Korean by surname – her great-grandparents emigrated from Korea to Russia – she grew up between two cultures and made that in-between the starting point of her work. More than twelve years as an art director followed, throughout which she never stopped her own practice; that grounding in visual systems and composition continues to shape her painting. In 2018 she moved to South Korea, the homeland of her ancestors, where she continued to paint; she later divided her time between Korea and Bali. By then, painting had moved to the centre of her life.
Marina Ogai held her first solo exhibition, Inaya, in Ubud, Bali, in 2023, and took part in the OPEN ART Barcelona group show in 2022. She was featured in smART Magazine (Toronto) in 2023. Her work is held in private collections across the United States, Europe and Australia.
