With Comrade Lisa (Banksy), Gérard Boersma stages a woman contemplating a reinterpretation by Banksy of one of the most famous images in the history of art: the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci.
Boersma thus superimposes several eras and several artistic languages in a single composition: the masterpiece of the Renaissance, its detour from street art culture, and then the contemporary gaze on this image.
In the foreground, the spectator turns her back to us. Her dress of a deep blue contrasts powerfully with the pink, black, and white tones of the monumental figure facing her.
The difference in scale is striking: the spectator seems almost absorbed by the image she is contemplating.
Boersma takes here one of the characteristic devices of his work: we look at someone looking at a work of art.
But goes further. The observed image is itself the reinterpretation of a work that has become universal. Boersma thus constructs a true mise en abyme on the way in which art is transmitted, transforms, and reappropriated over the generations.
From Leonardo da Vinci to Banksy, then from Banksy to Boersma, the same image crosses the centuries and changes meaning according to who is looking at it.
The intimate format of 20 x 20 cm contrasts with the graphic power of the composition and gives it a particularly strong presence.
It all begins with a face.
That of the Mona Lisa.
Painted more than five centuries ago, she has become one of the most recognized images in the world.
Then Banksy takes it.
The Renaissance meets the street. The classical icon changes era, language, and meaning.
And finally, Gérard Boersma adds a third gaze.
A woman stops in front of it.
She contemplates this transformed Mona Lisa without knowing that, behind her, we are watching her in turn.
Leonardo creates the icon.
Banksy détourns it.
Boersma paints our fascination for her.
becomes thus a work on the circulation of images and on this extraordinary capacity of art to cross the centuries while continuing to provoke a gaze.
A work. A reinterpretation. A spectator. And finally, us.
Born in 1976 in the Netherlands, Gérard Boersma has been developing a figurative work for more than twenty-five years dedicated notably to our relationship with art, images, and contemporary culture.
Museums and galleries regularly constitute the setting for his compositions. His figures, often depicted from behind in front of immediately recognizable works, constitute one of the visual signatures of his work.
Boersma therefore does not only paint famous works: he paints our way of looking at them.
His universe establishes bridges between art history, Pop Art, street art, and contemporary society, while maintaining an immediately recognizable pictorial identity.
Artist Statement from Gerard Boersma: I create colorful and highly detailed works of art to express my love for the modern human as well as my concerns about contemporary city life. My hyperreal paintings are based on photographs I took during long walks through my hometown and major cities. They show people on the streets, in stores, public transport and museums or zoom in on popular products. To me these glimpses of everyday live are important as they say a whole lot about todays society. They show the way people see themselves, interact or are influenced by modern developments in various ways. I observe it, enlarge it and paint it. That way I freeze time and our fast and busy lives are forever captured in a moment. Finally ready to be observed quietly.
Biography I'm a professional and international recognized artist for over 20 years well known for my own style of realist painting. My art is in museums, galleries and private collections worldwide (North and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa). Paintings were shown alongside the biggest names in art history at leading art fairs in Europe and United States. I've studied painting and fine art at the School of Arts Minerva in the Netherlands, specializing in meticulous form of realistic painting. I currently live and work in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands.
