Description
A change of register. The background is a midnight blue that is almost black, with a few glints of cobalt surfacing around the silhouette. And against this darkness, Luxxo stands out in pale, sand-coloured tones, upright and face on, arms by its sides. Where other destinations explode with colour, GNelly opts here for contrast: light against night, like a Pacific beach after sunset.
The head, broad and round, is worked with a palette knife in circular gestures that remain visible in the thickness of the paint. Two black crosses, thick and glossy, stand in for its gaze. A patch of fuchsia marks the temple, and a row of small circles follows the curve of the skull like stitches. The body stays in creams and whites, crossed by three navy blue bands that run down the chest like stripes. A few flashes of bright pink and a touch of red at the end of one arm wake the whole thing up, while a thin yellow line in relief outlines the entire silhouette, like a neon tube.
The souvenirs of the journey are there, but spoken softly. The word “California" runs vertically down the chest, in small capitals. A yellow sun with fine rays opens on the torso, and a golden flourish crosses the belly. On one arm, a small heart outlined in red, a column of circles and a yellow spring coiling along the contour. On the other, a double row of black dots. At the very bottom, a grid drawn in one quick gesture, like a game of noughts and crosses left unfinished.
The freehand border is reversed too: it is cream on a dark ground. The name Luxxo runs vertically along the right-hand edge, and GNelly's signature is set in black in a pale cartouche at the bottom right.
It is on a dark background that automotive clear coat shows what it can do. The midnight blue becomes a deep mirror, like a car bonnet under city lights, and the whole room comes to be reflected in it. The pale relief of the character seems to float on the surface.
A one-of-a-kind piece, more graphic and more nocturnal, between pop art and urban art, signed and delivered with its certificate of authenticity.
