Description
Adùnní is a Yoruba name that means "one who is deeply cherished."
This painting explores the contrast between dignity and everyday struggle. Dressed in a regal headwrap, coral beads, and richly patterned așo okè, she embodies beauty, heritage, and grace. Yet she is caught in an ordinary, almost awkward moment, using her teeth to force open a bottle.
The piece reminds us that being cherished does not shield us from hardship. Even those who carry themselves with elegance face quiet battles that often go unseen. Strength is not always found in extraordinary moments. Sometimes it lives in the small acts of perseverance that make up daily life.
Adùnní is a tribute to women whose grace remains intact, even as they navigate life's constant demands. It celebrates resilience, dignity, and the quiet determination to keep going, even when no one is watching.
Presentation
Fadahunsi Akintomiwa Joseph, also known as Orthodox Arts, is a contemporary Nigerian visual artist and painter born in 2001.
At the heart of the artist’s practice is a commitment to Black Art, specifically an exploration of individuality in Black identity through the use of stripes. Working from a studio in Nigeria, the artist uses bold vertical lines as a signature visual element to represent cadence, structure, and the unique rhythms of Black life.
For the artist, Black Art is not merely an aesthetic choice. It is a vital vehicle for celebrating human dignity, cultural heritage, and personal expression.
