Description
A long time ago, many Black people were taken from their homes in Africa and sold like goods. They were put in chains and made to wear iron masks so they could not speak. People who owned them cared more about money than about their lives. Many suffered and many died.
The woman in this painting stands for all of them. Her mouth is covered, but her eyes are open and strong. She looks straight at you.
The mask and chains are rusty and old, because that time is in the past, but we must never forget it.
Today, things are better, but the work is not done. Black people are now loved and respected for their music, art, sports, and ideas. Our value is much higher than before, even in the Western world. Still, we keep telling the truth, so the pain of the past is never forgotten.
Presentation
Fadahunsi Akintomiwa Joseph, also known as Orthodox Arts, is a contemporary Nigerian visual artist and painter born in 2001.
At the heart of the artist’s practice is a commitment to Black Art, specifically an exploration of individuality in Black identity through the use of stripes. Working from a studio in Nigeria, the artist uses bold vertical lines as a signature visual element to represent cadence, structure, and the unique rhythms of Black life.
For the artist, Black Art is not merely an aesthetic choice. It is a vital vehicle for celebrating human dignity, cultural heritage, and personal expression.
