Description
Christos Kalfas has been creating, for several years, a body of work inhabited by myths, left to the whims of the imagination, invaded by varied iconographic symbols in which sophisticated images mix with signs of the Greek culture. The artist loves to show off these signs and his origins.
This appropriation of the imaginary and mythology is evident in each of his works, in a multitude of figures and images that reveal their richness to the conscientious viewer. One can produce sophisticated analyses of the rich bestiary the artist invents, the similarities between the things depicted, the fragmentation of the figurative elements, their floating in the limitless space, the settings of astral or architectural elements…
His practice evolved around the exploration of the technique of lacquer on wood whose glossy finish makes his poetic and fantastic works seem even more out of time.

Presentation
Born in 1955 in Eleftheroupolis (the Northern part of Greece), Christos Kalfas has been interested in print art since his adolescence. In the late '70s he moved to France and was accepted at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Saint-Etienne in 1978.
He likes to emphasize his origins in interviews, saying that “I arrived in France with a new perspective, a different culture and I was on another level than the art as it presented itself in France, which was… a little bit post-support-surface, a little bit conceptual, but in a French version: I think we all started to make figurative art because we were trying to create something new."
Starting in 1981, he started to take part in various exhibitions and salons, mostly in Lyon, Saint-Etienne and Paris before starting to have shows in Europe and Greece in the '90s and more regularly after 2000.
Today, he lives and works in Paris.
