Description
This striking artwork presents a compelling vision in the abstract genre, commanding attention through its intricate textures and subtle color palette. The piece is enveloped in a dominant patina blue-gray, which gives it an aged, weathered appearance, creating an immediate impression of depth and history. The surface is intentionally distressed, with layers of paint meticulously applied and scraped away to reveal the underlying hues and textures, resulting in an evocative, almost archaeological quality. The central focus is a square frame, where the artist employs a meticulous grid-like texture that hints at an underlying structure, offering a subtle sense of order amidst the abstract chaos. Small yet deliberate markings and scratches punctuate the surface, each contributing to a narrative of time and erosion. A sporadic application of contrasting colors – faint yellows, greens, and occasional flecks of red – disrupts the muted blue-gray expanse, imbuing the piece with a restrained vibrancy. These touches of color are applied sparingly yet purposefully, suggesting natural elements or glimpses of fading memories within the composition. The edges of the artwork display a rough, unrefined border where the paint appears to bleed and fray, reinforcing the theme of organic decay and raw authenticity. This imperfection at the margins contrasts sharply with the meticulous texture within the square frame, highlighting the artist's deft control over both chaos and structure. Overall, this piece is a masterful exploration of texture, color, and form. It exudes a profound sense of history and time, inviting viewers to delve into its layered depths and uncover the stories etched into its surface. The artwork’s complexity and subtlety make it a striking example of the power of abstraction to convey emotion and narrative without explicit representation.
Presentation
My name is Michael R. Grine and I am an process oriented artist. I use a combination of found objects, acrylic paints, and aerosol paints to create abstract patterns on wood and canvas.
Statement
Curiosity. Emotion. Experimentation. Exploration. Leap of faith. Pursuit of knowledge. These words only begin to describe what my art signifies or represents. I was born an artist and have always identified myself as an artist. I possess an insatiable creative drive to make art out of the images I see in my mind. To help satisfy this impulse, I am always exploring new places and trying new things. Having freedom of expression and not being limited to one style or technique of making art are paramount to my identity as an artist. I love the many different processes of making art and experimenting with new ways of creating art.
My inspiration stems from color, music, literature, and the excitement about the unknown possibilities of taking everyday objects and using them in a way that differs from what the manufacturer intended. I use a combination of found objects, acrylic paints, and aerosol paints to create abstract patterns on wood and canvas. Some of my methods include combining different chemicals and paint on paper or in plastic or wood box frames to distort vivid colors that are mixed or thrown right on the canvas. The result is the distortion of lines and contours, and layers of translucent or opaque paints on the canvas or in random patterns.
