Description

This artwork, characterized by its striking simplicity and abstract interpretation, features a humanoid figure with a distinctive, almost childlike charm. The figure, delineated with bold, turquoise lines against a white background, exudes a sense of whimsy and playful energy. Notably, the figure boasts two antenna-like protrusions on its head, enhancing its otherworldly appearance and inviting viewers to speculate about its origins. The artist employs a minimalistic yet effective color palette, where the vivid turquoise contrasts crisply with the stark white canvas. This strategic use of color draws attention to the figure's facial features and body outline, emphasizing its cheerful expression. The eyes, rendered as bold turquoise circles, convey a sense of innocence and curiosity, while the broad, sweeping lines of the mouth suggest a joyful demeanor. Additionally, the figure is adorned with a prominent, circular object around its neck, possibly symbolizing a medal or a personal emblem, adding a layer of intrigue and personality to the character. The loose, expressive brushstrokes lend the piece an energetic and spontaneous feel, as if the artist captured the subject in a moment of gleeful motion. The overall composition, with its vibrant colors and whimsical subject, not only captures the viewer’s attention but also engages their imagination, urging them to consider the story behind this enigmatic, joyful figure. This artwork stands as a testament to the power of simplicity and abstraction in evoking emotion and sparking curiosity.

Presentation

My name is Michael R. Grine and I am an process oriented artist. I use a combination of found objects, acrylic paints, and aerosol paints to create abstract patterns on wood and canvas.

Statement

Curiosity. Emotion. Experimentation. Exploration. Leap of faith. Pursuit of knowledge. These words only begin to describe what my art signifies or represents. I was born an artist and have always identified myself as an artist. I possess an insatiable creative drive to make art out of the images I see in my mind. To help satisfy this impulse, I am always exploring new places and trying new things. Having freedom of expression and not being limited to one style or technique of making art are paramount to my identity as an artist. I love the many different processes of making art and experimenting with new ways of creating art.

My inspiration stems from color, music, literature, and the excitement about the unknown possibilities of taking everyday objects and using them in a way that differs from what the manufacturer intended. I use a combination of found objects, acrylic paints, and aerosol paints to create abstract patterns on wood and canvas. Some of my methods include combining different chemicals and paint on paper or in plastic or wood box frames to distort vivid colors that are mixed or thrown right on the canvas. The result is the distortion of lines and contours, and layers of translucent or opaque paints on the canvas or in random patterns.
