Hokusai is one of the great masters of Japanese printmaking from the Edo period. His extensive body of work, produced over more than seven decades of continuous activity, profoundly shaped the history of global art far beyond the borders of Japan.
Born in 1760 in Edo, he developed throughout his life an exceptionally rich visual language, grounded in close observation of nature, the depiction of movement, and an ability to simplify forms down to their most expressive essence. His series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, among which The Great Wave off Kanagawa stands out as one of the most widely reproduced and recognised images in the history of art, demonstrates a technical and compositional mastery that continues to captivate through its modernity.
The introduction of his prints to Europe in the second half of the 19th century sparked a major wave of enthusiasm known as Japonism, which had a lasting influence on artists as diverse as Monet, Van Gogh, Klimt, and Toulouse-Lautrec, profoundly reshaping their approach to colour, line, and composition. This legacy continues today in contemporary creation, where his iconic motifs are regularly reinterpreted, appropriated, or recontextualised within new visual environments.
On Artsper, this selection highlights contemporary works that revisit Hokusai's universe, ranging from tributes to his iconic compositions to graphic reinterpretations of an aesthetic legacy whose vitality has never waned.
