Pantone's Color of the Year 2023 has been officially announced. Viva Magenta is a vibrant shade of red, blending both warm and cool tones on its own unique spectrum. Pantone describes the shade as being “rooted in nature," taking inspiration from the red of cochineal, a precious natural dye derived from insects and known for its unusual strength and brightness. In three words, its creators described it as “brave, fearless, and pulsating." This year, Pantone and technology-driven Artechouse will collaborate on “the Magentaverse," an immersive exhibition bridging the gap between the natural and digital worlds.
The decision for Pantone's 2023 Color of the Year is based on extensive research of prominent colors in contemporary culture, from the world of fashion to fine art and design. Looking back through recent years of popular culture, shades of magenta appear again and again, from the red carpet to the runway. But more than identifying trends, Pantone aims to portray the zeitgeist of our time, as well as to set the tone for the year ahead. Viva Magenta represents the desire for courage, optimism, bravery and joy in difficult and uncertain times, as well as the need for innovation and unconventional thinking.
To demonstrate the 2023 Pantone Color of the Year's presence in the world of contemporary art, Artsper has curated a selection of works in magenta hues. Spanning diverse mediums and styles, join us in a bold journey of color with works by artists such as Heidler & Heeps and Sébastien Créteur!
